Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
