An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured I would book lodging after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and found myself drifting near the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere that stayed open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the following day, but as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
I must have looked out of place because a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if everything was alright. I shared my situation and without hesitation she said I could crash on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered me some free dinner: one filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.
I never did study at ANU, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. I hope karma has repaid her generosity abundantly. The world needs more folks with such compassion.
