Bluefin Fish Sells for Record Price of $3.2m at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages locations throughout Japan and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," remarked the business owner, a regular figure at the traditional first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is renowned for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," noting, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to surpass his own record once again.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with sky-high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which indicated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.
The intense activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction concluded.
"I feel like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one happy customer.
