Detentions Made in Relation to Massive Unlawful Rubbish Dump
Two individuals have been taken into custody as an element of an investigation into the tipping of thousands of tons of refuse in a rural field in the county of Oxfordshire.
Officials stated that a 69-year-old was apprehended at a dwelling in the town of Andover, while a 54-year-old was taken into custody in Slough, Berkshire in connection with the huge heap of rubbish dumped near the area of Kidlington.
These apprehensions come after a recent investigation which revealed the existence of in excess of 500 unlawful tips throughout England, including at least 11 so-called "major sites" greater than 20,000 metric tons.
A representative for the environmental agency said that the apprehensions were for environmental and proceeds of crime crimes and were a "vital step" in continuing probes. Both men have been set free on bail.
Size of the Issue
The illegal site in near Kidlington, situated between the river Cherwell and the A34, is estimated to contain approximately 21,000 tons of refuse in a pile which is up to 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) tall.
This pile of waste is made up of what looks to be treated household waste, chopped up plastic items, expanded polystyrene, automobile tires and assorted everyday objects.
It constitutes just one of 517 unlawful dumps across England, at least 11 of which hold more than 20,000 tons of garbage. They encompass a 280,000-tonne location in Cheshire, two 50,000-tonne sites in Lancashire and Cornwall and a 36,000-tonne tip in the county of Kent.
The total figure of such bigger dumps is probably to be larger, as the environment authority has previously stated it does not maintain information on volume for all unauthorized tip.

Community Outrage
Preparation work to clean up the Kidlington area site began recently following worries over the threat of blaze and the impact that would have on the nearby major road.
A commercial waste removal firm has been awarded the task to deal with the area over the next 12 months at a expense of ÂŁ9.6m.
An enforcement manager for the national regulatory unit stated that the agency would be seeking to recoup the clean-up costs under proceeds of crime legislation from any party successfully found guilty at the termination of its active investigation.
She noted that the recent apprehensions would help "drive the inquiry forward" and allow authorities to "follow more leads to determine exactly what transpired and who was a party to it".
"This illegal tip at Kidlington was an shocking and deliberate attack on our environment and officials empathize with the public's outrage at this terrible offence," she said.
A cabinet representative welcomed the detentions, commenting: "The illegal dumping of waste at the site is disgraceful and has resulted in considerable harm to the ecology and upset to the nearby residents.
"The administration is pledged to eliminating this type of criminality in the country, by boosting funds to tackle waste crime, recruiting more officers and enacting stricter controls and penalties for those who flout the law."
The arrests were made on a recent Thursday by agents from a specialist serious crime squad and are in addition to an previous arrest of a 39-year-old from the Surrey area in the autumn. He was let go awaiting additional inquiries.
