Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
