Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Squad
The English team has chosen a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several past matches.
In those matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.
However the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
