Canada's skeleton athletes have been absolved of accusations that they rigged a qualifying event for the upcoming Games, thereby denying rival athletes a chance to qualify.

Central Claim and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran Katie Uhlaender alleged the team from Canada of pulling a majority of its competitors from a recent event in New York. The allegation was this shrunk the competition, making a lower points pool available. Although she took first place, the American athlete did not secure her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.

“The current IBSF Rules allow member nations to withdraw athletes from an event at any time,” declared the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the federation stated it would take no action, rejecting the allegations as no rules were broken of its code.

Canada's Explanation

In response, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton defended the decision, citing competitor health and the need for rest. The organization asserted that some athletes had competed extensively that week and the move was “appropriate, transparent and in keeping with both athlete welfare and the integrity of the sport.”

Representatives of the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had voiced “serious concerns” about the selection system's integrity.

For Katie Uhlaender, the 2026 Olympics are planned to be her final Olympic appearance. Her path to qualification remains, the probable American berths are projected for other athletes. She is a 2012 world gold medalist whose best Games result was just off the podium in Sochi 2014.
