Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is far too wily not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the tactical structures and player rankings required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.
Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Skill counts but England know from bitter experience that there is consequences when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He watched England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about loving the squad's spirit and values. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he has. We all must support him and create an environment where he can channel this edge in matches and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against Serbia and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted playmaker who needs love and guidance. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in his club's victory versus the German side this week.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to pick another youngster once he overcomes a fitness issue. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is also so used to playing for Man City in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
Tuchel mentioned one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other drilling in goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” he said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an superior one.
