US Brokers Ukraine Talks in Abu Dhabi as White House Seeks for Conflict Resolution
Diplomatic talks with American, Russian, and Kyiv representatives commenced in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, marking the most recent stage in efforts to broker a ceasefire deal to conclude the continuing conflict in Ukraine.
Key Representatives and Initial Talks
American military Secretary Dan Driscoll reportedly conferred with a Russian group on Monday night, with discussions proceeding into Tuesday.
“The talks are going well and we remain optimistic. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,” an official representative remarked.
Ukraine’s top intelligence official, Kyrylo Budanov, was scheduled to take part in the discussions, though it remained unclear whether direct talks with Russian delegates would take place or if distinct bilateral meetings would be conducted.
Identity of the Moscow delegation was not immediately clear. “I have nothing to say. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Kremlin spokesperson told state media.
Context and Updated Peace Plan
These talks follow prior discussions in Switzerland where American and Kyiv officials modified a draft US plan for resolving the war.
Moscow has not yet approved the latest draft of the plan and is not expected to accept many of the Ukrainian changes.
Russia’s foreign minister, the Russian diplomat, declared that any revised peace plan must reflect the “essence and wording” of what was agreed during earlier summit meetings between both countries.
International Responses and Apprehensions
European leaders are reportedly finding it difficult to stay engaged in the negotiations as US representatives drive the efforts.
Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, who has emerged as a primary interlocutor between Washington and European officials, stated that the immediate future would be decisive in efforts to reach a agreement.
He allegedly spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato officials, emphasizing that “Decisions about Ukraine’s future rest with its people, and with European security falling under Europe’s purview.”
Meanwhile, the French president, the French official, warned against a settlement that would amount to a “capitulation” for Ukraine.
“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. However, must Kyiv and European nations consent to these terms? The answer is no,” he stated.
Specifics of the Initial US Proposal
American proposal was reportedly composed of numerous clauses and was based on dialog between US and Moscow representatives, with input from Ukrainian defense authorities.
Major aspects of the plan allegedly involved:
- Ukraine ceding land currently occupied by Russia
- Further zones that would be required to be voluntarily given up
- Limits on the size of the military forces
- Amnesty for all parties in the war regarding war crimes
Latest Events and Continuing Difficulties
American official reportedly went to the Ukrainian capital to brief Zelenskyy on the proposal and urge quick approval.
This pressure, combined with the leaking of the proposal, reportedly shocked Ukrainian and European officials.
The Ukrainian president stated that the country was facing one of the most difficult periods in its existence and was being forced to decide between “surrendering honor or sacrificing a vital partner.”
Subsequently, Driscoll briefed alliance representatives on the plan in Kyiv, with one attendee labeling it as “a disastrous gathering” and stating that European officials were shocked by both the substance and tone of the delivery.
Washington later moderated its stance, indicating that the 28-point proposal was an “starting position for talks” rather than a final demand.
Military Developments During Negotiations
While peace talks proceed, Russian forces has maintained its regular strikes on Ukrainian urban centers.
Russian forces allegedly fired numerous of projectiles and hundreds of drones at targets in and around Kyiv, according to Ukrainian sources.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that the Kremlin must not feel it could win the conflict while negotiations were underway.
“What matters most now is that all partners move toward diplomacy together, through joint efforts. Measures against Russia need to produce tangible effects,” he stated.
Kyiv’s leader confirmed that multiple people had been killed in the overnight assault on the capital.
